About Holly…

I was born in Nottingham under a full moon on a freezing March night (ok I made up the bit about the moon but it’s how I like to imagine it.) My parents named me after an Andy Williams song, an unwitting forecast of a future in music, albeit the slightly croony variety.

I wrote my first song aged 10 about a boy I liked in my class who was far cooler than me (not difficult). Luckily he never heard it as it wasn’t very good but I kept writing until something half-decent came out.  After the school years I ended up in Edinburgh, studying literature by day and moonlighting on the folk scene by night. Whilst there I won a songwriting competition at the Fringe and acquired a penchant for whisky and the Scottish accent, as well as a collection of smelly sheepskin coats from Oxfam.

All roads like these usually lead to London; mine was no different. After a few years on the well-trodden acoustic circuit, via occasional forays into euro-house and trip-hop vocals, I teamed up with double bassist / producer Al Mobbs and violinist / vocalist Emily Blacksell, in whose estimable company I recorded my first album, The Optimist’s Daughter, released 2008 in association with Ambiguous Records.

Not long after this, I met double bassist Alex Karban and drummer Robbie Jarvis, who became and remain the backbone of the band – and slowly but surely we have evolved into Holly and the Wolf.
